SafeNTrusted — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2025-10-10

SafeNTrusted (“we”, “our”, or “SafeNTrusted”) provides a Chrome extension that helps users identify potentially unsafe websites (scams, phishing, malware, adult content, etc.) and improve online safety. This Privacy Policy explains what data the extension may access, why the data is needed, how we use and store it, and how users can control their data.

Summary — what you need to know

Permissions & Justifications

storage

Why we need it: We use Chrome's storage API to save user preferences (for example: filters, blocked categories, UI preferences), the extension's settings, and recent scan/cache results locally. Storing preferences locally ensures faster startup and a consistent user experience across sessions without unnecessary network requests.

activeTab

Why we need it: When the user clicks the extension icon or requests a scan, activeTab allows SafeNTrusted to temporarily access the URL and page content of the currently active tab so we can analyze the site and show a safety rating. This access only occurs on explicit user action.

tabs

Why we need it: tabs is used to identify open tabs and to display quick warnings or icons on tab titles when a site we have flagged as suspicious or malicious is open. It lets us update the UI and provide relevant notifications across tabs.

webNavigation

Why we need it: This permission allows SafeNTrusted to detect when navigation events occur (for example: the user moves from one site to another). When navigation is detected we can automatically run a safety check and alert the user quickly — protecting them before they interact with a potentially dangerous site.

Host permissions (e.g., <all_urls> or allowed hosts)

Why we need it: Host permissions let the extension read the current page’s URL so it can be evaluated by our safety engine. If you grant broad host access (such as <all_urls>), the extension can evaluate any site you visit. We only use this to build and return a safety result. The extension does not inject scripts or alter page content unless required for an optional feature explicitly enabled by the user.

How we use the data

Retention & deletion

Local data stored via Chrome storage remains on your device until you change settings, clear browser data, or uninstall the extension. If you have data synced to SafeNTrusted servers (for example community ratings), you can request deletion by contacting us at privacy@safentrusted.com. We will respond to verified deletion requests and remove your server-side data within a reasonable timeframe.

Sharing, third parties, and analytics

We do not sell personal data. We may share aggregated, non-identifiable analytics with third-party service providers to improve detection and performance. Any third-party services we use are contractually bound to protect the data and only use it for the service they provide.

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect data in transit and at rest on our servers (where applicable). However, no system is 100% secure — please keep strong unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication on any services where available. If we learn of a breach affecting user data on our servers, we will notify affected users and relevant authorities in accordance with applicable laws.

User controls & opt-out

Why these permissions are necessary for proper operation

The permissions requested are strictly tied to the extension’s single purpose: protecting users from unsafe websites and providing real-time safety signals. The extension cannot provide reliable real-time protection without:

Children

Our extension is not designed for use by children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal data, please contact us at privacy@safentrusted.com.
